The History of Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is a fake grass matting made of synthetic fibres made to resemble natural grass. It is produced solely from synthetic materials. Monsanto Industries made the first artificial grass in the 1960’s. It was installed in a playground at the Moses Brown School in Providence Rhode Island.

Artificial grass has come a long way since the early days. It is now used for residential lawns, businesses and many other places. It is no longer that rough, hard surface it once was. It is now difficult to tell the difference between a good artificial grass and the real thing both for how it looks and feels.

What does artificial grass look like?

With artificial grass you get what you pay for. The cheaper products imported from China look unnatural in colour and wear out quickly, which is not what you want for a garden lawn.

The more expensive types of artificial grass are more realistic looking for they contain a thatch (mixture of different colour grasses). Look closely at you garden lawn and you will see a whole variety of different colours. They also have a backing made of a single polymer which allows the grass to be recycled. This is very important to us as we attempt to send nothing to landfill.

How is artificial grass made?

The Fibres
The materials used to make the artificial grass fibres are Polyethylene, Polypropylene or Nylon. The two options used in in residential and commercial projects are either Nylon and Polyethylene. Polyethylene has become the most popular in the last 10 years for many reasons. Polyethylene is the most durable plastic available. It is non-toxic, recyclable, strong and environmentally friendly.

The Thatch
For the thatch (small curly fibers that add resistance to the artificial grass)

The Backing
For us the the backing consists of a single polymer which the grass fibres are inserted into.

The Coating
The coating is a kind of glue used to bond the yarns to the backing, so they can’t be easily pulled out.

Hopefully this article explains in more detail what artificial grass is.
