August Install of the Month: Adding Shape and Definition to an Eltham Garden

For our August Install of the Month, we are featuring a beautifully planted garden in Eltham, London SE9, where the main challenge was not simply replacing a tired surface, but restoring structure and definition to the overall garden design.

This was already an attractive garden, with borders packed full of mainly herbaceous planting. Over time, however, the original shape of the central gravel area had gradually been lost. The edges had been eaten away, leaving the garden without the strong form and definition it once had.

The recent hot, dry weather had also taken its toll on the planting, making the loss of structure even more noticeable.

The solution was to introduce a perfectly shaped artificial lawn that would give the garden a clear focal point and help frame the surrounding planting.

 

Restoring Structure to the Garden

When a garden is heavily planted, the shape of the lawn or central area becomes extremely important.

In this Eltham garden, the original gravel centre had once provided a strong visual structure, but years of wear had softened the edges and left the space feeling less defined.

Rather than simply recreating a standard rectangular lawn, we worked with the existing garden design to create something that complemented the planting and gave the whole space a much stronger identity.

The new lawn was formed with carefully shaped curved edges, helping it flow naturally through the garden while still creating a crisp separation between the grass and the densely planted borders.

 

A Circular Seating Area as a Focal Point

At the top end of the garden, we created a perfect circular area for seating.

This became a key feature of the finished design, giving the garden a clear destination and creating a natural place to sit and enjoy the planting.

The combination of the curved lawn edges and circular seating area helped bring balance and symmetry back into the garden, while still keeping the overall feel soft and informal enough to work with the herbaceous borders.

It is a good example of how artificial grass can be used as part of a wider garden design rather than simply as a replacement for natural turf.

For this installation, we fitted Spring 35 Recyclable Artificial Grass.

Its natural appearance worked particularly well alongside the existing planting, creating a clean, consistent green surface without overpowering the character of the garden.

The finished lawn now provides the strong definition that the garden had gradually lost, while also giving the customer a low-maintenance surface that will continue to look neat throughout the year.

 

Why Curved Artificial Grass Edges Work So Well

Straight lines are not always the best solution.

In established gardens like this one, where borders are full of mature and herbaceous planting, curved lawn edges can create a much softer and more considered finish.

They help the grass sit naturally within the garden and can be used to highlight planting, create movement and define different areas of the space.

In this Eltham project, the curved edges were central to the finished look. They gave the lawn a strong shape while still allowing it to feel integrated with the surrounding borders.

 

The Finished Result

The transformation has given this garden back the structure it had gradually lost.

The new Spring 35 recyclable lawn now provides a clearly defined centre to the garden, with flowing curved edges and a circular seating area creating a strong focal point at the far end.

The surrounding planting remains the star of the garden, but the new lawn now frames it properly and gives the whole space a much more finished and intentional appearance.

This project shows that artificial grass can do much more than create a low-maintenance lawn. When it is carefully designed and professionally installed, it can help bring shape, balance and definition to an established garden.
