Artificial Grass Installation in North Weald, Essex – Solving a Waterlogged Clay Garden

The Work:

This month’s featured project took us to North Weald in Essex, where we were asked to transform a large garden that had become almost completely unusable due to waterlogging.

The property had a very high water table combined with heavy clay soil, meaning the lawn remained wet and muddy for much of the year. During the winter months it was effectively impossible to use, and even in the summer the grass struggled to dry out properly.

The homeowners wanted a long-term solution that would allow them to finally enjoy their garden again.

After inspecting the ground conditions, it was clear that the most reliable approach would be to install a properly constructed artificial grass lawn with a drainage base designed to cope with clay soil.

This is a common problem we see when carrying out artificial grass installations in North Weald and across Essex, where heavy clay ground can prevent natural lawns from draining effectively.

The Challenge – High Water Table and Heavy Clay

Clay soil holds water extremely well. While this can be beneficial in some gardens, it becomes a major problem when combined with a high water table.

In this case, the water simply had nowhere to go.

Without correcting the ground conditions first, installing artificial grass would not have solved the issue. The lawn could still become soft or hold water beneath the surface.

This meant the project required significant ground preparation and drainage improvements before the artificial grass could be fitted.

Rebuilding the Garden Levels

The first stage of the project involved reshaping the levels across the garden.

Two sides of the lawn were raised using treated timber sleepers, creating a structured edge to the garden while also helping to manage the slope of the ground.

We then removed approximately 10 tonnes of heavy clay soil from the highest areas of the lawn. Removing this clay allowed us to create the depth required for a proper drainage base.

Installing a Free-Draining Stone Base

Once the excavation work was complete, we introduced nearly 30 tonnes of clean 60mm drainage stone.

This larger grade of stone is ideal when dealing with clay ground because it creates large air gaps throughout the base layer. These gaps allow water to move freely through the structure rather than becoming trapped close to the surface.

The drainage stone effectively forms a reservoir beneath the lawn, where water can temporarily sit before slowly permeating into the clay below.

By designing the base in this way, we created a structure that allows the lawn to remain firm and usable even when the surrounding soil retains moisture.

This type of drainage solution is often required when carrying out artificial grass installations on clay soil in Essex.

Artificial Grass Installed – Spring 35

With the base fully prepared and compacted, the lawn was ready for the artificial grass installation.

For this project the client selected The Spring 35 Recyclable Artificial Grass, one of our most popular landscaping grasses.

Spring 35 provides:

  • A natural looking colour blend
  • Soft fibres that feel comfortable underfoot
  • Excellent durability for family gardens
  • A recyclable backing system

Once fitted and power-brushed, the finished lawn looked completely natural and provided an immediate transformation to the garden.

A Garden That Can Finally Be Used

What was once a wet and muddy lawn for much of the year is now a clean, level, and fully usable outdoor space.

The combination of proper excavation, drainage stone installation, and high-quality artificial grass has completely changed how the garden can be used.

The homeowners can now enjoy their garden throughout the year without worrying about mud, puddles, or damaged grass.

Projects like this demonstrate why correct ground preparation is the most important part of any artificial grass installation.

At Perfect Grass Ltd, every installation begins with an assessment of the soil and drainage conditions so we can design the base structure correctly.
