For our May Project of the Month, we are featuring a complete garden transformation in Hornchurch, Essex, where a tired real grass lawn had reached the point where it simply could not cope anymore.
This was a busy family garden used by children and a dog, and the natural lawn had been destroyed over time by heavy use, pet wear and the recent dry weather. Instead of being a green, usable space, the garden looked worn out all year round.
The customer wanted a lawn that would look smart, stay clean and be suitable for everyday family life — without the mud, patchy grass and constant maintenance.
The Problem: A Lawn Destroyed by Dogs, Children and Dry Weather
Like many real lawns, this garden had struggled to survive under normal family use. Dogs, children and long periods of sunshine had left the lawn looking bare, uneven and unattractive.
The ground itself was also extremely difficult to work with. Because of the unusually dry weather, the soil had become baked rock hard. This is something we would normally expect to see in July or August, not at this time of year.
Digging out the old groundworks was therefore much harder than usual. This is always the most back-breaking part of an artificial grass installation, but on this project it was particularly demanding.
The Groundworks: 18 Tonnes of Aggregates Through the House
One of the biggest challenges on this Hornchurch project was access.
The only way to get materials into the garden was through the house, which meant every part of the job had to be carefully planned and carried out with extra care.
In total, we used around 18 tonnes of aggregates to create the correct foundation for the new artificial lawn. This high-quality base is essential if the finished lawn is going to stay level, drain properly and perform well for years.
