Synthetic grass was introduced to the market over 50 years ago primarily as a substitute for real grass. Over the years it has become a popular alternative to grass in residential gardens, rooftops, school playgrounds and sports pitches.

What I am finding now is that synthetic grass is cropping up in more and more unusual places from coastal towns in Kent to suburbs of London. Only last week I was asked to install some artificial grass on a wall.

This got me thinking. What other unusual places have I seen or installed synthetic grass? So over the last few weeks I have been scouring the country to give you just a few of the alternative uses I have seen for artificial grass. Here I have come up with a list of my 7 of my favourite alternatives. Hopefully this will give you some inspiration to look at the green stuff in a different light. And if you’re looking for something a bit different why not give me a call with your idea and I will see if I can help.

1. Synthetic grass shoes

Looking for the perfect present for the lady in your life that has everything? I spotted these shoes in a department store in Greenwich, London. I thought that the grass added a real summery feel to the shoes and would make a great addition to any ladies shoe collection. What’s more they look really comfortable!

2. Vehicle covering

I didn’t have to go very far to snap a picture of this one. Outside my house in sunny Sidcup to be exact! I had some offcuts of the Knoll synthetic grass from an installation. I thought that adding some synthetic grass stripes to the back of my truck would be fun and promote what I do.

3. Shop signage

Shops are always looking for the edge. It can be difficult to stand out from the crowd in a busy shopping centre. This shop in Hampshire has certainly created an impact with this signage.  I wonder what they sell?

4. Sofa Covering

Friends of mine in East London wanted to add a splash of greenery to their roof garden. With both people working long hours they didn’t want the maintenance and hassle involved with a real grass garden so they took an old sofa and covered it with synthetic grass. I think you will agree the result looks great and will definitely be the talking point of the next party. By the way where is my invite?

5. Football dugout seating

Being a big football fan myself I was extremely excited about installing fake grass on the seating in the dugout of Welling United Football Club. Have you noticed that it was tested on the away teams dugout first!

6. Side table covering

The perfect accompaniment to a Pimms and lemonade is a synthetic grass table. Eat your heart out Laurence Llewellyn Bowen! I bet you haven’t got one of these!

7. Shelving

Wanting to add a splash of colour to their predominantly white interior this restaurant in Kent installed synthetic grass on their shelving units.

As you can see synthetic grass is an extremely versatile product that can be installed in hundreds of different locations. It is down to your imagination as to many of its possible uses. It is quick, easy and relatively cheap to install, it is virtually maintenance free and will bring a splash of the outdoors into your location.
